SEO for Small Businesses: A Practical Starter Guide

• 3 min read • By Creva Solutions

SEO does not have to be mysterious. These are the steps that matter most for a small business website.

Search engine optimisation (SEO) means making your website easy for search engines to understand and useful for the people searching. For a small business, it is less about tricks and more about doing a few basics well and consistently. Here is where to start.

1. Find the words your customers actually use

Write down how customers describe what you sell. Someone looking for your service may search “house plan in Kallakurichi”, “website design near me” or “mobile shop Sankarapuram”. Look at the suggestions Google shows as you type, and the questions in the “People also ask” box. Use these phrases naturally in your pages.

2. Give each main service its own page

One page that lists everything competes poorly against businesses with a page for each service. Each service page should explain what the service is, who it is for, how it works, where you offer it, and answer common questions. This also gives customers exactly the information they need.

3. Write clear titles and descriptions

  • Page title: describe the page in about 50–60 characters, for example “2D Drafting Services in Kallakurichi | Your Business”.
  • Meta description: one or two sentences that explain the page and encourage a click.
  • One main heading (H1) per page, with subheadings that organise the content.

Every page should have its own title and description. Do not repeat the same ones across pages.

4. Make the site fast and mobile-friendly

Compress images, avoid heavy effects and test your pages on a phone. Our guide to Core Web Vitals explains what Google measures.

5. Strengthen your local signals

  • Show your business name, address and phone number on every page, usually in the footer
  • Keep these details identical everywhere online
  • Complete your Google Business Profile
  • Mention the areas you really serve, naturally, where it helps customers

6. Link your pages together

Link from your home page to each service, from each service to related services, and from helpful articles to the services they relate to. Internal links help visitors and search engines find your most important pages.

7. Publish helpful content

Answer the questions customers ask you every week. A short, clear article that genuinely helps is worth more than many pages written only for search engines.

8. Measure and improve

Set up Google Search Console to see which searches show your site, which pages get clicks and any technical problems. Track calls and enquiries too: rankings are only useful if they bring customers.

What to avoid

  • Stuffing town names or keywords into every sentence
  • Copying content from other websites
  • Buying links or fake reviews
  • Creating many near-identical pages for different towns
